Welcome to Caspar

Caspar is an unincorporated village on the north coast of California. Once the thriving (pop 5,000+) home to a lumber mill that provided Redwood lumber to rebuild San Francisco after the 1906 quake, Caspar is now a quiet village with a history of bringing people together. When coastal development threatened in the early 1990s, Casparados rebuilt a strong sense of community, raised funds to preserve our Headlands (the old mill site), purchased our unused schoolhouse for a Center, reinvented neighborly governance. The village has persevered and now includes businesses, the Jewish Community Center (once the Foursquare Lighthouse church), our Community Center, and a farmstand and community garden. Now a population of 500(+/-), we cannot imagine wanting to live anywhere else.

The Community Center was built by the residents to be the schoolhouse for their children starting at the end of the 19th Century. It continues to undergo numerous additions and upgrades to keep it in top condition. Recent additions include the full commercial kitchen, Solarium, and backup solar power supply system, and plenty of space for bringing people together. 

Caspar Community has kept the Center going with wonderful events that have become communal traditions – Casparfest, 4th Sunday Breakfast, Pub Night, Harvest Dinner, and other 'fun-raiser' occasions – through the hard work of many wonderful volunteers. The Center is a perfect venue for all types of events: meetings, classes, workshops, birthdays and memorials, markets, performances, and community gatherings.
